>> Outsourcing Strategy

The striking thing about strategy and the connection to outsourcing is that it is so weak.  Again and again, we see companies which excel at formulating and implementing business strategy that fail to bring those talents to the arena involving external partners.  We believe this to be a result of the absence of those strategically strong players in the outsourcing and partnering arena primarily because most Danish organizations have structured and supported their outsourcing and partnering efforts with operationally strong resources.

We believe that this should be the primary focus of change for organizations wishing to succeed with outsourcing: formulating a formal outsourcing strategy which is fundamentally connected to their business strategy.

In the instances where we see companies having structured an outsourcing strategy which directly supports their business strategy, we do see a solid correlation to value for money and a strong correlation with time savings.

Saying that outsourcing strategy is weak isn’t the same thing as saying that companies don’t have outsourcing strategies.  Many do.  It’s just that those strategies are overwhelmingly focused on achieving operational goals.  What we mean by this is that outsourcing strategies that we generally see are built to address operational issues, e.g. development capacity for product development rather than strategic issues, e.g. our company will gain market share by increasing the volume and pace of product development.

>> Knowledge-Intensive Outsourcing Benchmark  Study Launched

Trellis’ benchmark study of knowledge-intensive outsourcing is on the market.  We have 25 companies participating in our study in addition to an array of vendors, academics and other organizations working in or studying this field.   Trellis’ full benchmark study of knowledge-intensive outsourcing is available for purchase at 800 dkk.

In addition to detailed quantitative analysis based on the questionnaire executed by the participating companies, there is qualitative analysis and assessment touching on topics such as value for money, the learning curve, relationships with vendors and partner decision making responsibility, along with measurements, risk management and internal process improvement.  The full study also includes individual assessments of the IT, manufacturing, pharmaceuticals and design industries.  Please contact Trellis for your copy.

>> Course: IT Outsourcing Strategy Building

Dansk IT is offering a course on IT outsourcing strategy building given by Trellis' Katie Gove.  Our next date is June 18.  Previous participants have said that they got a “great introduction to the subject along with useful tools which can be put to immediate use.”
